Kenny Loggins
Kenny Loggins is a Grammy Award-winning soft rock/adult contemporary artist with a career spanning over four decades. In his work as a singer, a guitarist and keyboardist, and a songwriter, Loggins has achieved both critical and popular success and has cemented his position as one of the major figures of American music.
Kenny Loggins was born in Washington state in 1948. His family later moved to California. In his early musical works he showed promise as both a singer and a songwriter. He first found widespread fame as one half of the duo Loggins and Messina, alongside Jim Messina. The pair's first album, Sittin' In, was released in 1971. Though success initially proved elusive, the record gradually gained traction, especially among college audiences. Probably the best-known song from Sittin' In is "Danny's Song," which was written by Loggins. Loggins and Messina went on to release eight more albums during the early to mid-1970s, with other popular songs, including a number written or co-written by Loggins, including "House at Pooh Corner," "Angry Eyes," "Vahevala," "Watching the River Run," and "Your Mama Don't Dance." With some 16 million records sold, they became the most popular musical duo of the period.
Loggins and Messina split on friendly terms in 1976. Loggins then launched a successful solo career, beginning with Celebrate Me Home (1976), Nightwatch (1978), and Keep the Fire (1979). He collaborated with other artists, including Stevie Nicks ("Whenever I Call You Friend") and Michael McDonald ("What a Fool Believes" and "This Is It," which in 1980 won the Best Male Pop Vocal Grammy).
The 1980s saw Loggins expand into a new genre: film soundtracks, starting with songs for the 1980 comedyCaddyshack and continuing with other hits such as Footloose (1984) and Top Gun (1986). He was also one of many popular singers to take part in the famous "We Are the World" single, which helped to raise money to help those suffering from famine in Africa.
Loggins saw further success as he continued to branch out into new musical territory in the 1990s, with songs such as "Conviction of the Heart" from his 1991 album Leap of Faith, which has become closely associated with the environmental movement, and "Return to Pooh Corner," the title track of a 1994 children's album. Loggins has continued working regularly during the past decade, including reunion tours with his old partner Jim Messina in 2005 and 2009.
Loggins has also made use of his talent and popularity by supporting numerous charitable causes. For instance, he recently took part in a Grammys on the Hill event to lobby Congress to support better music education for young people.
Kenny Loggins is scheduled to appear soon at the Canyon in Agoura Hills. To get more information or purchase tickets, please visit www.canyonclub.net.
